HISTORICAL CONTEXT

The telegraph is an electrically powered piece of machinery that is used for transmitting messages over a very long distance. Being developed in the 1830s by Samuel Morse this inventions changed long distance communication for the better. It functions by sending electrical signs of signals across very long wires connected to each other. People sent messages to each other using morse code. This consisted of several versions of representing the alphabet with different combinations of dots and dashes. The first telegraph message was sent by Morse in 1844 from Washington, D.C, to Baltimore, Maryland and by 1866 there was a telegraph line connecting the United States to Europe. Overtime communicational related technology has advanced and the creation of the telegraph was the first major step taken towards making things more time efficient.
